We volgen in Blue Bayou de als Zuid-Koreaanse baby geadopteerde dertiger Antonio LeBlanc (Chon), die de VS dreigt te worden uitgezet wanneer zijn papieren niet in orde blijken te zijn. Ook al woont hij daar al decennialang. Chons keuzes zijn niet altijd even subtiel (zie Antonio’s achternaam), en hij heeft zijn film wel heel erg volgepropt met zijlijntjes, maar desondanks blijft zijn hartenkreet hoorbaar en aangrijpend. En Vikander is – ondanks haar schoonheid en sterrenstatus – opvallend geloofwaardig als Antonio’s slovende eega Kathy.
